A research paper, Extinction of one of the world’s largest freshwater fishes: Lessons for conserving the endangered Yangtze fauna, from Science of the Total Environment, an international academic journal, was recently released online in which the Chinese Paddlefish, a rare species in the Yangtze River otherwise known as the “King of Freshwater Fish in China”, was declared extinct. The corresponding author of this paper is Dr. Wei Qiwei, a chief scientist and researcher of the Yangtze River Fisheries Research Institute of Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences, and the first author of this paper is Dr. Zhang Hui. The researchers predicted in this paper that the Chinese Paddlefish would become extinct between 2005 and 2010.

""Figure 2. Chinese-Paddlefish-Themed stamp

On September 17, 2019, the extinction of the Chinese Paddlefish was confirmed by experts from the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) at an academic conference in Hangzhou. These experts stated that this result has been reported to the IUCN office and will be officially updated to the IUCN Red List, the IUCN List of Endangered Species.

The Chinese Paddlefish had very huge body, it is said that it could grow up to thousands of pounds. It was known as the “Tiger in Water” and “the King of Freshwater Fish in China”. Ten years ago, in 2009, IUCN made the assessment of the endangered level of Chinese Paddlefish as “critically endangered”.

However, in the past 16 years, the Chinese Paddlefish did not appear despite searches made by fishermen and scientists. According to The Paper, on the first day of the Chinese Lunar New Year in 2003, scientists from the Yangtze River Fisheries Research Institute of Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences rescued a Chinese Paddlefish for what became the last time. They then then released and followed it. Unfortunately, the ship hit a reef later, and the radio signal of the released Chinese Paddlefish disappeared. No one imagined that this would be the last time that the Chinese Paddlefish would be seen.

IUCN’s experts have said that there is no evidence to show that the Chinese Paddlefish still exists. If the Chinese Paddlefish is photographed or captured again, the IUCN will reconsider adjusting its species endangerment level.
