What is SO2\u202fand how does it get in the air?<\/b><\/p>\n

What is SO2?<\/b><\/p>\n

EPA\u2019s national ambient air quality standards for SO2\u202fare designed to protect against exposure to the entire group of sulfur oxides (SOx).\u202f SO2\u202fis the component of greatest concern and is used as the indicator for the larger group of gaseous sulfur oxides (SOx).\u202f Other gaseous SOx\u202f(such as\u202fSO3) are found in the atmosphere at concentrations much lower than SO2.<\/p>\n

Control measures that reduce SO2\u202fcan generally be expected to reduce people\u2019s exposures to all gaseous SOx.\u202f This may have the important co-benefit of reducing the formation of particulate SOxsuch as fine sulfate particles.<\/p>\n

Emissions that lead to high concentrations of SO2\u202fgenerally also lead to the formation of other SOx. The largest sources of SO2\u202femissions are from fossil fuel combustion at power plants andother industrial facilities.<\/p>\n

The largest source of SO2\u202fin the atmosphere is the burning of fossil fuels by power plants and other industrial facilities. Smaller sources of SO2\u202femissions include: industrial processes such as extracting metal from ore; natural sources such as volcanoes; and locomotives, ships and other vehicles and heavy equipment that burn fuel with a high sulfur content.<\/p>\n

What is PM<\/b><\/p>\n

PM stands for particulate matter\u202f(also called particle pollution):\u202fthe term for a mixture of solid particles and liquid droplets found in the air. Some particles, such as dust, dirt, soot, or smoke, are large or dark enough to be seen with the naked eye. Others are so small they can only be detected using an electron microscope.<\/p>\n

Particle pollution includes:<\/b><\/p>\n

PM10\u202f:\u202finhalable\u202fparticles,\u202fwith diameters that are generally 10 micrometers and smaller; and
\nPM2.5\u202f:\u202ffine inhalable particles,\u202fwith diameters that are generally 2.5 micrometers and smaller.<\/p>\n

How small is 2.5 micrometers? Think about a single hair from your head. The average human hair is about 70 micrometers in diameter \u2013 making it 30 times larger than the largest fine particle.<\/p>\n

Sources of PM<\/b><\/p>\n

These particles come in many sizes and shapes and can be made up of hundreds of different chemicals.
\nSome are\u202femitted directly from a source, such as construction sites, unpaved roads, fields, smokestacks or fires.
\nMost particles\u202fform in the atmosphere as a result of complex reactions\u202fof chemicals such as sulfur dioxide\u202fand nitrogen oxides, which are pollutants\u202femitted from power plants, industries and automobiles.<\/p>\n

Particulate matter contains microscopic solids or liquid droplets that are so small that they can be inhaled\u202fand cause serious health problems. What is NO2\u202fand how does it get in the air?<\/b><\/p>\n

Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) is one of a group of highly reactive gases known as oxides of nitrogen or nitrogen oxides (NOx). Other nitrogen oxides include nitrous acid and nitric acid. NO2\u202fis used as the indicator for the larger group of nitrogen oxides.
\nNO2\u202fprimarily gets in the air from the burning of fuel. NO2\u202fforms from emissions from cars, trucks and buses, power plants, and off-road equipment.<\/p>\n

Effects of NO2<\/b><\/p>\n

Health effects<\/b><\/p>\n

Breathing air with a high concentration of NO2\u202fcan irritate airways in the human respiratory system. Such exposures over short periods can aggravate respiratory diseases, particularly asthma, leading to respiratory symptoms (such as coughing, wheezing or difficulty breathing), hospital admissions and visits to emergency rooms. Longer exposures to elevated concentrations of NO2\u202fmay contribute to the development of asthma and potentially increase susceptibility to respiratory infections. People with asthma, as well as children and the elderly are generally at greater risk for \u202fthe health effects of NO2.<\/p>\n

NO2\u202falong with other NOx\u202f reacts with other chemicals in the air to form both particulate matter and ozone. Both of these are also harmful when inhaled due to effects on the respiratory system.<\/p>\n
