Faulty installation or inadequate operating and maintenance procedures also can cause USTs to release their contents into the environment.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">[expand title=&#8221;Step 1: Release detection for underground storage tank&#8221;]\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Because detecting UST systems releases quickly helps stop contamination before it spreads from UST sites, EPA requires owners and operators detect releases from their UST systems. EPA allows three categories of release detection: interstitial, internal, and external.
